Christofias meets with investigators
PRESIDENT Demetris Christofias yesterday met with the five criminal investigators appointed to examine how convicted rapist and murder Antonis Prokopiou Kitas escaped from hospital last week.
Athos Kannaourides, Despina Kyprianou, Onisiforos Ioannou, Panayiotis Pelagia and Athanasios Socratous were appointed by the Cabinet on Wednesday.
The late afternoon meeting was also attended by Attorney-general Petros Clerides and Assistant Attorney-general Akis Papasavvas and state investigative prosecutor Antonis Vasiliades.
No comments were made following its conclusion.
Earlier in the day government spokesman Stefanos Stefanou said he would prefer to refrain from commenting on the incident when a criminal investigation was underway.
“This case incites either way and also raises a lot of questions [which need answering],” he said.
Stefanou said the criminal investigators would examine every angle from a criminal and disciplinary standpoint.
Depending on the investigation’s outcome, responsibility would be apportioned where due, he said.
Stefanou refrained from commenting on whether Police Chief Iacovos Papacostas should resign in the event of possible oversights on his part.
Instead he said the investigation should be left in the hands of the criminal investigators and that any decisions could be made once their work was done.
Stefanou could not give a specific timeframe regarding how long that would take, only that the five had been instructed to work at an intense pace and to conclude as soon as possible.
Meanwhile police investigations into Kitas’ whereabouts continued without success. Reports said officers were working around the clock and combing entire areas to try and find the 42-year-old killer.
