‘Paphos water cuts to stay’

But can the old pipes handle them?

PAPHOS MUNICIPALITY decided not to resume a continuous water supply at a meeting on Monday night.

The council decided to continue the current water programme, supplying water on alternate days until the end of July, when the situation will be reviewed again.

The council stated that for the first 15 days of June; no water consumption reduction was recorded, due to a significant number of fractured and leaking pipes, which caused a significant amount of water to be lost.

Although, the last two weeks of June showed a 21.3 per cent saving in water consumption.

One councillor commented that in fact this figure is probably nearer to 30 per cent, if all new houses, apartments and other construction work are taken into account.

The council also stressed that comments issued to the media, regarding concerns for the old pipe system, before the cuts began, were in fact, correct.

The President of the Paphos Municipality water committee, Pitsa Papadopoulou, previously complained the pipe system in Paphos, is old and outdated.

“We will be unable to sustain the increase and decrease in pressure,” she said, “I fear this will cause many more problems.”

Last month Paphos Mayor Savvas Vergas had been considering putting a halt to the cuts, a move that even in its contemplation drew the ire of mayors and officials in Cyprus

Vergas said the continuous flow was needed due to severe damage an intermittent water supply was damaging the ageing pipe system.

“We are considering our options,” he last month. “Cuts have been implemented recently with water being supplied to homes in central Paphos on alternate days. It seems though, that it doesn’t make a difference to the results and they are much the same as before the withdrawal of a regular supply.”

Paphos Municipality came under increasing pressure from the government and other cities to pass water rationing onto consumers like the rest of the island, something the mayor was against. Allegations were also levelled at the municipality regarding the illegal use of water and keeping incomplete water records. Both accusations were strenuously denied.

Vergas believes the acrimony over water usage stems from Nicosia, with the intention of causing harm to Paphos Municipality.

Paphos has been divided into separate areas, Kato Paphos and Paphos town.

Cuts will operate on alternate days in July in these areas, from 7.30am until 7.30am the following morning.
