Bats just need to be loved and not reviled

THEY may make you squirm or even conjure up images of vampires but according to a Limassol-based animal rights organisation, bats need to be loved, not reviled.

The group ARC/KIVOTOS has launched bats project aimed at raising awareness for the misunderstood mammal in a country where they have been systematically slaughtered by locals who see them only as pests.

“From 2006 when we discovered that the lovely and harmless fruit bats were being slaughtered we have been focusing on bats in many ways-these beneficial and fascinating little creatures need all the friends they can get,” said Patricia Radnor, Director of ARC/KIVOTOS.

“The story of fruit bats in Cyprus (as in some other countries) has not been a happy one: these gentle creatures have in the past been persecuted almost to extinction and are still being illegally killed by members of the public,” she added.

As part of its bats-awareness campaign, the ARC have been visiting schools, accompanied by a life-sized Livingstone’s fruit bat toy, presenting a fairy-tale about bats, Stellaluna.

Special school clubs, the Friends of Bats or FOBs have also been set up in schools all over the island. The animal rights organisation has also been arranging bat walks, and loaning out its bat detector, which is a device that allows people to listen to the sound of bats nearby.

ARC is also organising two major bat-related events taking place this May in Cyprus. The first is the EUROBATS Advisory Meeting taking place in Cyprus for the first time. Bonn-based EUROBATS was set up to oversee the implementation of the Bats Agreement for the protection and conservation of bats.

The choice of Cyprus as the meeting’s location is deemed important, primarily as source of pressure on Cyprus to sign the agreement, which it has failed to do so far.

The second event will also take place in cooperation with the Environment Department is a bat conference, aiming to organise bat conservation and move things forward.
