British soldier faces jail after drink drive crash

A BRITISH soldier could face up to two years behind bars after crashing his car near a cliff top after a night out drinking.

The soldier, who has not been named, was found to be three times of the legal limit when he lost control of his vehicle and smashed through a metal highway barrier and finally ground to a halt just metres from the cliff’s edge.

According to British bases police, the incident happened late last Friday night on the old Paphos to Limassol road, near the Curium Amphitheatre.

SBA Chief Inspector Andreas Pitsillides said the driver, who was carrying two passengers at the time of the crash, is lucky to be alive.

“The car suffered extensive damage and the two passengers initially complained of back pains before being released,” he said.

“If the car had gone over the edge – they may well have died. The barrier was badly damaged, so that gives you some indication of how fast they were travelling in the first place,” he added.

In addition to a possible jail term, the driver may also face court martial, a fine and a one-year driving ban.

SBA police announced in mid-December that they were increasing checks on the old Limassol-Paphos road in their hunt for dangerous and drunk drivers.

Pitsillides said that on the whole police were making progress in their battle against drink drivers, but admitted this incident came as a disappointment.

“It’s a huge disappointment that this happened so soon after the high profile campaign before Christmas, but we must continue our efforts to combat this problem all year round,” he said.

Early statistics suggest that the SBA anti-drink drive campaign during the festive period was a success, recording a slight reduction on 2007.

In total, SBA police carried out over 3,000 breathalyser tests between April and the end of December 2008, with 187 drivers testing positive.

Drink driving is the second leading cause of road deaths in Cyprus, responsible for almost 25 per cent of all fatalities and local police and SBA authorities now championing a zero tolerance policy.
