State promises school bus improvement

COMMUNICATIONS Minister Nicos Nicolaides yesterday promised to replace all school buses that have mechanical problems.

He made the pledge at Limassol’s Ayios Athanasios high school, whose bus service has been plagued with problems, and also promised to start a debate including parents and teachers on ways to improve free school bus transport.

“Under no circumstances do we intend to jeorpadise the secure transport of students. Our aim is to review each problem separately and see how to solve it,” said Nicolaides referring to the complaints voiced last week by Ayios Athanasios students on the condition of school buses.

Following a meeting with involved parties, including the teachers’ association, student body, local authorities and the Road Transport Department, Nicolaides announced a set of measures had been decided.

“We have decided on two measures: first, thorough checks and overseeing of buses, and wherever we identify buses that have problems, they will be immediately replaced; and second we will contact parents and gather their opinions through a questionnaire to see how we should move forward,” he said.

Limassol Urban Buses, the private company responsible for operating school buses, also confirmed that old buses would be replaced in the next school year. “The company spends half a million euros a year for these 20-30 buses and you know that this is not profitable, because by the end of the year they will be replaced. However, we still think it’s the best investment to ensure our children get safe transport, even though it may not be the most comfortable,” said Yiorgos Kyriacou, Director of Limassol Urban Buses.
