Jovial surroundings for perfect pizza

Napoli Pizza

The people of America eat around 350 slices of pizza each second. And although not one of them, I’ve been to some great pizza places off the island – where passionate chefs toss the base up in the air, and closely guard their secret pizza recipes. Pizza though is more than just fast food. Pizza connoisseurs take part in endless debate about crust, dough techniques, cheese, sauce, toppings, the quality of the ingredients, and the oven used to cook it. I am not going to get lost in the technical detail – I’m here for the fast food experience. Napoli Pizza does not pretend to be a wood-fire oven, gently kneading-the-dough kind of place. But it does claim to be “The Best Pizza Around”. After many recommendations from friends, I thought I’d try it.

The restaurant is basic and clean, with brick walls and wooden floors. When the friendly waiter placed our little dinner plates on our table, I wondered: “How will a meal fit on there?” I soon discovered when, 15 minutes after ordering it, our Hawaiian with extra toppings arrived. It was huge. We had ordered large, but wondered how we would fare when presented with a 45cm treat. Spread out on a revolving pedestal, it swamped our table, and the reason why our plates were that size immediately dawned. If they were any bigger, they’d fall off.

There was no charred crust (which some prefer, but I don’t). It looked perfectly cooked and it felt fresh with a reasonable amount of “flop” without being soggy. The tomatoes and cheese tasted great and the dough was on the right side of rubbery, with a hint of grease. All in all, I was pleased. I tucked into an accompanying Village Salad (€5.80) and found it delicious. It had been dressed well with lemon and olive oil, and the flavours of the lettuce, tomato, cucumber, onion, green peppers, olives and feta cheese blended in, accompanying the pizza perfectly.

We’d also ordered a side dish of Potato Wedges (€2.65) and these were delicious, crispy on the outside, light and potatoey on the inside, served with a pot of mayonnaise.

The atmosphere inside the restaurant was jovial. The friendly pizza-makers greeted customers and smiled warmly as they prepared pizzas. Choosing to eat-in instead of take-away means you pay a little more for each item, and on the days when you feel like staying at home, Napoli delivers locally (for €1.54), and are open seven days a week. It’s interesting to note there are no deep pan, stuffed crust, or other combinations here; just pure, plain traditional thin slice, with pizza diameters ranging from 32cm for a ‘small’ to 52 cm for an ‘extra large’. Our large was more than adequate for four.

I’ll definitely return to try some of the other pizza combinations available, while the restaurant also serves the usual Italian pastas, sea food and Caesar salad, burgers, garlic breads and sweet pizzas. I didn’t try the Sweet Pizza topped with white chocolate and fresh strawberries, or the Hazelnut Pizza with chocolate spread, almonds and hazelnuts (€6.40) – maybe I’ll indulge next time.
