Officials brace for violence as Cyprus football teams meet

THE big clash between league leaders Anorthosis and third place Omonia is the highlight of the mid-week games in the Cypriot football league.

After a fortnight break, and in the wake of the presidential elections, officials fear politically-motivated football violence at the game.

Anorthosis openly backed DISY’s Ioannis Kasoulides, while Omonia supporters are known for their AKEL-ite inclinations.

Anorthosis, still unbeaten this season, risk their eight point lead being cut even further, while Omonia are known for their good away performances at Antonis Papadopoulos stadium.

Second placed APOEL look to take advantage of the result at the big game, as long as they win at home against Alki.

This will be APOEL’s first performance without their star player Ricardo Fernandes who left for the Ukraine last week.

APOEL’s makeshift back line (they are missing no less than four defensive players) will have to cope with the likes of Alki’s number 10 Clayton Fereira Cruz who returns to the team.

Two games will be decisive in efforts by teams to make it into the privileged top four: AEK travel to Limassol to play a decimated Apollon behind closed doors and Enosis Neon Palalimniou (ENP) host Ethnikos Achnas.

Although coach Nir Klinger is under fire, AEK could not have wished for better circumstances in which to face Apollon away.

Apollon are paying the penalty for its players’ and fans’ actions when they hosted APOEL in January.

Apollon appear to have a scoring problem as of late, while their new young signing from Nigeria Eddy Oseni is set to make his debut in the starting defensive line up.

ENP look to make it two wins out of two over Ethnikos Achnas this season.

They will be without Pouma, Panikos Spyrou and George Kolanis, who are missing out because of suspension.

On the contrary, Toza Smapourits has all of his players available and his team are in high spirits following their hard-earned away victory at the expense of APOP in Paphos.

APOP are hosting Aris Limassol, as they try to return to their winning ways and keep pushing for a top four finish.

Should Aris defeat APOP, they would significantly bolster their chances of remaining in the league next year.

Doxa Katokopias are hosting AEL in Makarios stadium.

The team is undefeated in ten games at home this year, and they will be at full strength on Wednesday.

The dressing room atmosphere could not be better at AEL: drawing to Omonia and beating Salamina at home under new coach Andreas Michaelides has restarted their season.

Salamina are hosting Olympiakos in what is a last gasp match for both teams.

Five games from the end of the first part of the season, and these two teams are the bookies’ favourites to be relegated.

The first game between them was a six goal thriller, with Salamina prevailing 4-2 at GSP.
In the midst of financial and administrative crises, Panikos Orphanides’ outfit will be without defenders Andreas Ioannides and Marcos Almeida who are suspended.

Nikos Andronikou’s Olympiakos travel to Larnaca after a contentions home game against Apollon, where the team from Limassol earned a draw after the referee awarded a last-minute controversial penalty against a nine-man Olympiakos.
