‘Dump dispute would be resolved if meetings were better attended’

Mayor of Yeroskipou, Tassos Kousapos, has hit out at community leaders of the areas affected by the new rubbish dump in Mamonia.

He says that none of the community representatives has bothered to attend recent meetings between the three Paphos region mayors, who are searching for a solution.

Problems arose at the recently opened tip, when local communities staged sit in protests closing the access road, preventing trucks and lorries dumping heavy loads of construction and demolition waste.

A variety of meetings have taken place in the last two weeks between the mayors of Paphos, Peyia and Yeroskipou, the Paphos district office, and the Interior Ministry. A solution needs to be found urgently as the old dump in Marathounda had to close, as it was full.

Villagers are concerned over the impact the tip would have on the environment and underground water supplies and want it moved to another location.

Kousapos assured a final decision on the matter could be expected within the next few days. He added that solutions to problems only emerge out of discussions between all the parties concerned.
