Celebrate the sounds of nature

The Kypria Festival picks up pace as it now runs its final leg. With the last remaining shows on the agenda guaranteed to get your heart racing, things really spice up this week as the Dulsori Percussions group from Korea give local crowds insight into the ‘spirit of the beat’ at the Strovolos Municipal Theatre.

If we were to sum up what Dulsori do, it would probably be most fitting to say that they bring the mesmerised synchronised drumming of the orient to the stage, all interspersed with singing and dancing. Curious to know more? Not your typical performers, the Dulsori group use rhythms created by rural farmers in their homeland. Celebrating the elements with their instruments, they recreate the intimate sounds of the natural world, be it rain, wind or thunder.

Established in 1984, Dulsori have taken the Korean percussive style known as ‘pungmul’ to whole new levels as they create beats to an astounding choreography, stirring the audience every time. Throughout the event, the performers will entice you to the stage to join in. Don’t resist the temptation - you’ll be thankful to experience what the dynamic rhythms of Korea are all about in an environment that feels more like a festival than a concert.

Hernan Cattaneo returns to Versus

With no big names in the DJ world visiting our island since the arrival of Tiesto and Matt Hardwick a few weeks back, you now have a real reason to rejoice as you head on down to good old Versus next Monday night. Don’t expect all the usual music once you get there as things are about to get really hot behind the decks to welcome Tuesday’s holiday!

We are talking about a visit by none other than the Argentinian Hernan Cattaneo, he’s rocked our world plenty of times here in Cyprus but crowds seem to keep on wanting more. His last performance in Versus back in May went down an absolute treat, and he worked the crowds into a right frenzy. Not only was the club packed to capacity, with all the lovers of his house tunes raving that it was one of the best nights in Versus they had ever had, but it was also reported that Cattaneo himself said it was one of the best gigs he’s ever given!

Since his performance in Cyprus, he’s been touring around all corners of the globe, popping up in America, Europe, Japan and Korea. That’s not to forget his regular sets in Ibiza with tech trance beats that keep people dancing until the early morning. Now enjoying 14th place on DJ Mag’s list of top world DJs, he keeps busy with plenty of new tracks. Most recently, he released ‘Anime’ with John Tonks - a tune he’ll no doubt be playing next week.

SMALL PANEL Exhibition

Whirlwind attack on the senses

Argentinian artist Ariana Cuevas takes us across high seas and faraway continents in a new exhibition in picturesque Polis. With the face of a geisha juxtaposed beside the Statue of Liberty and vibrant colours feeding off each other, the show has a whirlwind effect on the senses as each image teases the imagination in unusual ways.

Fusing colour and composition, her bright and cheerful works combine scenes of nature and people from across the world, all set against graphic and sometimes rather surreal landscapes. Vivid blues meet tropical greens, as rather mystical and sensual faces from around the world come to life on canvas. Often layering images and using a mix of graphic techniques, a pop art feel makes each piece a real feast for the eyes.

Cuevas was born in Buenos Aires in 1972 and in 1993 the artist moved to Paris, where she worked as an assistant to sculptor Haim Kern. Moving to Brussels in the late 90s and graduating from art school in the city, she went on to show her paintings across the world.

With the title of her current exhibition, ‘Crossing the Sea’, referring to Cuevas’ ancestors and their immigrant background, we as viewers are forced to travel back and forth from South America to Europe and beyond. Fusing together cultures and people often considered to be worlds apart, there’s plenty to keep you hooked as each image stares back at you with its own tale to tell.

Cruzar El Mar (crossing the sea)
Solo painting exhibition by Argentinean artist, Ariana Cuevas. Until November 7. Forza9 Gallery, Polis tis Chrysohous, Paphos district. Monday-Saturday 10am-3pm and 6pm-9pm. Tel: 99-127428.

Art under the hammer

Art goes under the hammer once again as the distinguished works of Cypriot and Greek artists will be auctioned off at the Hilton Hotel this Wednesday. Organised by Psatharis Auctions, the event has grown into quite a grand occasion in the capital.

With 108 works in total, you can set your sights on the pieces before the bidding begins by popping down to the Hilton in the next couple of days before the auction. If you’re interested in buying, it might be the perfect chance to really get a good look at what’s on offer as you make your final attempt to lay claim to the piece that appeals to you the most.

Some of the cheapest works include paintings by Alecos Fassianos, Glyn Hughes, Christos Christou and Costas Economou with prices fluctuating around the €1,000 mark. Especially set up for the occasion, the Psatharis website boasts a full list of all the works to be auctioned off, accompanied by prices and pictures. You can even read up on each artist.

When it comes to the higher end of the price spectrum, there are works on offer worth up to a rather hefty €40,000. The work of Constantinos Maleas named ‘Portrait of a Young Girl’ has already caused quite a stir as it stands as one of the first works created by the well known Greek artist in the early 1900s.
