Cyprus health authorities on alert over tainted milk

FOLLOWING the Chinese milk scandal, the Cypriot health authorities are carrying out a public-health risk assessment by investigating milk by-products currently on the market.

In China, the contaminated milk crisis has so far resulted in four infant deaths and affected 53,000 children.

Cyprus, along with the rest of the EU, is on alert for composite products that may contain the toxic substance melamine.

The Head of the Health Services Giorgos Giorgalas has issued a circular to all state health inspectors stating that investigation will focus on products such as biscuits, canned coffee and chocolate that have been imported from China or countries known to trade with China.

“We are being vigilant by examining every possibility,” said Giorgalas. “We have requested that all food companies that trade milk products produce certificates to guarantee the safety of ingredients in their products.”

The synthesised substance melamine is often used as an ingredient in durable plastics and cleaning products. When added to food products melamine can appear to increase the protein content.

In small quantities, the substance is harmless but in larger doses it can cause kidney stones and other health complications.

Senior Health Inspector Andy Marangos said that the investigations were being taken very seriously, even though the chance of contaminated products existing in Cyprus was minimal.

“As far as we know, there are no products on the market that contain milk from China,” said Marangos. “We are not in any immediate danger, however, we will still take every precaution to ensure there are no contaminated products on the market.”

Marangos explained that the substance melamine could also be a danger to adults. “So far in China infants have been affected because they proportionally drink much more milk than adults and have more sensitive metabolisms.”

The European Commission has asked the European Food Safety Authority to assess consumer safety and will be issuing updates to all EU nations.
