Hassapis Omonoia beats the odds in playoffs opener

DJORDJE Prstojevic netted 22 points while shooting four for six from behind the arc as Hassapis Omonoia upset Intercollege ETHA 59-56 in the first game of the best-of-three national play-offs series on Tuesday night at the Eleftheria Athletic Centre.

It was clearly visible that both teams approached the game with great caution as the win in this encounter could prove to be crucial for playoff advancements. It was the official visitors who held a six-point lead, 19-13, at the end of the nervous opening quarter. They then managed to increase their lead to seven points at the half-time without any of the players really excelling on both sides.

Kyriakos Adamou’s men managed to reduce their deficit to three points at the beginning of the final period at 43-46, despite the absence of Davorin Dalipagic who was unable to feature in the second half due to ‘flue-like’ symptoms. Dalipagic was only one for five in the 16 minutes of playing time. Intercollege ETHA’s other leading player, Nikolas Papadopoulos, also had a disappointing night shooting two for 10 from the field.

The Engomi side had no strength to take control in the last ten minutes of the game as Renos Pittalis’ men held on to claim a very important victory, 59-56.

Corey Santee scored 14 points for Intercollege ETHA, while Aleksandar Gilic had 13 points and nine rebounds.

Marvin Stone and Arthur Davis had 11 and 10 points for Hassapis Omonoia, while Vladimir Zaric was the MVP of the game according to the tendex index of 0.70 with nine points, five rebounds and four steals.

The second game is scheduled for next Tuesday at the same athletic facility.
