Youth fighting for his life after crash
AN 18-YEAR-old National Guardsman is fighting for his life after being critically injured in a car accident in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Panayiotis Charalambous, from Tseri, was one of five teenage passengers in a car driven by an 18-year-old.
They were returning to their homes after a night out.
Under circumstances still being investigated, the driver lost control of the vehicle as he was turning onto Lycavitos Street off Makarios Avenue in Engomi.
The vehicle mounted the pavement before colliding with a dirt mound and an electricity pylon.
The guardsman was immediately transferred to Nicosia General Hospital and underwent surgery on serious head injuries.
Two fellow passengers were kept in the hospital overnight while the driver and the others were released after receiving first aid.
A breathalyser test revealed a blood alcohol reading of 10mg, well below the legal limit of 22mg.
According to the initial police investigation, excess speed was to blame for the accident.
According to a spokeswoman at Nicosia General Hospital yesterday, Charalambous’ condition was still critical.
In a separate incident, four people were taken to Larnaca General Hospital after being injured in a collision involving two vehicles on the corner of Eleftherias and Spyros Kyprianou Avenues in the town on Sunday afternoon.
Forty-five minutes earlier in Dali, a 26-year-old motorcyclist suffered a fractured skull when his bike collided with a car driven by a 46-year-old woman on Chalkanoros street.
