Cypriot businessman opens first eco night club

THE WORLD’S first self-styled ‘ecological night club,’ opened in London on Thursday night, the brainchild of a Cypriot property developer.

Surya, which is situated on Pentonville Road in Islington, operates on solar, Aeolian and renewable source energy, with minimum waste of water and other resources.

Cyclists and walkers get free admission with all patrons wishing to enter having to sign a pledge to work towards curbing climate change.

Inside Surya, the Sanskrit term for the Sun God, is a hi-tech dance floor made up of wooden boards. But underneath are crystals which compress when people tread above them and as they move an electrical current is generated.

This ‘piezoelectricity’ is fed back into the club’s energy supply powering all its lights and air conditioning. There are even plans to donate any surplus electricity to local residents.

Other features include a wind turbine, solar energy panels, waterless urinals and cubicles made from linseed oil, resin and soda. The bar serves organic drinks.

Big plasma screen televisions (running off the dance floor’s power) show images of poverty and desolation from around the world. Messages are flashed up warning of the Earth’s diminishing resources.

Andreas Charalambous, 35, also known as ‘Dr Earth’, has spent £1m sterling converting the club. He said: “The dance floor can generate around 60 per cent of our electricity. We also have tables made of magazines, walls made of old mobiles and CDs – it’s pretty wacky. The waterless urinals will save around 90 gallons of water and we harvest rainwater.”

Charalambous said the project is part of a struggle to protect the environment, noting that anyone can participate.

“Unless we stop preaching to people and use an inclusive philosophy we’re never going to create the revolution to combat climate change.”

Charalambous stood as a Conservative parliamentary candidate against the late Labour MP Bernie Grant at the age of 23 and backed Boris Johnson's successful campaign to become London mayor. A qualified barrister, now worth in excess of 100 million pounds, his latest business venture will recycle glass, metal, plastic and paper products used in its bar, with Charalambous promising to donate part of the club's profits to charity.

The event, which saw Jade Jagger perform a set, drew the attention of the worldwide media and was attended by Shadow Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Secretary Peter Ainsworth, who said the club was proof that man could enjoy night life with minimum waste, adding that businesspeople in various sectors could follow Charalambous’ example.
