Looking to Ireland for notes on reconciliation

EXPERTS FROM Ireland and Northern Ireland are in Cyprus today to offer their experiences in dealing with their political division.

They hope to use the knowledge they have gained by resolving their own situation as a means of assisting efforts to find a solution to the Cyprus problem.

Kicking off tonight at 8.30am, at the Melina Mercouri Hall in Nicosia, the seminar will be hosted by the Reconstruction and Resettlement Council (RRC) and attended among others by President Demetris Christofias, economic and development experts from Belfast and Nicosia Mayor Eleni Mavrou.

As RRC Chairman Nicos Mesaritis explained, Northern Ireland was chosen as the most appropriate example with the most similar situation to Cyprus.

“It is not just the reunification of the island, but how its society went from blood-shed to co-existence,” he said. “We see this example and realise that putting the burden of history behind us and living together is feasible.”

One issue the RRC is currently occupied with is preparing the ground work in case the fenced-off part of Famagusta is released and returned to its residents.

They are working on issues such as how the community will operate if they return, and the safety of the buildings, which have been abandoned since the 1974 invasion.

“Famagusta is the most expensive experiment of the plan, due to the abandonment, lack of life and maintenance. The area has been taken over by nature,” Mesaritis explained.

One of the speakers today will be Kate Burns, Expert-Consultant and Coordinator of the Irish mission.

“One of the reasons we are here is that we feel we have been given so much support internationally in the Northern Ireland situation, we have the obligation to give something back,” Burns explained. “It’s certainly not the same for every country, but there are some parallels.”

Her experience has taught her that putting up boarders is not a solution. “There are no simple solutions; no quick fix. And there are many unaddressed issues.”

Burns hoped her team would have a role to play in assisting a resolution to the Cyprus problem.
