Toy store picket for better conditiona

A STRIKE outside the Jumbo toy store in Lakatamia, Nicosia, has dragged into its second week, with around 20 disgruntled employees returning to the picket on Monday.

The original strike began on June 20 because the Jumbo Company refused to agree and sign a collective agreement together with the SEK and PEO trade unions, regarding staff terms and conditions.

The strikers are demanding CoLA (cost of living allowance), provident fund, wage increase and decent working hours for all workers, rather than the individual agreements which are flexible and changeable.

Earlier reports said there are over 90 people still working at Jumbo but SEK trade union representative, Michalis Korzamias, says this is untrue.

“At the moment there are only 40 people working at the store,” he said.

Jumbo management maintains there are still over 110 workers in the store.

Just over 20 members are taking part in the strike. An announcement from the Jumbo store clarifies that out of these 23 members, only seven are permanent staff employees. Other participants taking part are temporary staff that only began working at Jumbo on June 1. The rest, they say, are all members of the two unions involved; none of the union members are employed by the store permanently or temporally.

Employees of Jumbo who were against the ongoing strike contacted the management. In response a declaration has been signed by 128 employees stating that they support the company and demand that the strike stops.

The demonstrators have cut off the entrance into Jumbo’s parking entrance and have been trying to divert customers to go to other competitive stores.

On Tuesday morning, one striker told a female customer that the store was closed. Confused as she was able to clearly see that there were in fact people walking in and out of the store with trolleys. The woman approached the front of the store where to ask if the store was in fact closed.

Korzamias said harbour workers were joining the toy shop staff in compassion and will not bring the containers of merchandise to the Jumbo store.

Jumbo responded by saying: “This action by the harbour adds pressure into forcing our company to agree to [the strikers’] terms.

“The company is not against the right to strike, but we are not willing to be intimidated or blackmailed into a collective agreement demanded by a tiny proportion by its work force.

“What the company objects to is the blocking of its parking entrance into its business on its private property by picketers and union representatives.”
