Quick summer fixes
You don’t have to spend hours in the salon or a fortune to get that polished summer look!

For nails with class

Keeping fingers and toes tidy and polished is a great way to give you a groomed and cool summer look, especially if you use the new barely there tones including ivory, pink, sea shell, mother of pearl or palest coffee. If you have really dry feet or cracked heels in the summer, fret not! Just scrub your heels with a pumice or special foot scrubber in the shower every day or so and then slather in a rich lotion or oil such as almond or olive. You will see great results within days.

For an easy but effective manicure or pedicure, follow these easy steps:

l Remove old varnish from nails and cut or file to desired shape
l Soak one hand or foot in a bowl of warm soapy water for six or seven minutes
l Apply cuticle remover to soaked cuticles and gently push back with a wooden, hoof-shaped cuticle stick
l Trim away any loose dead bits of cuticle using cuticle nippers (from pharmacies)
l Rinse fingers and dry, then repeat process on other hand or foot
l Use a base coat on the nails, then paint one or two coats of a pale transparent varnish. Use a top coat for extra shine and longer wear.

Wrinkly or sun parched skin

Hands, knees, tops of feet and the chest are very vulnerable to looking crepey and aged, especially after years of sun exposure. Use gentle nurturing creams and oils to keep the skin glowing and healthy. A mixture of almond oil and around 20 per cent wheatgerm or rosehip oil with a few drops of lavender, rose, neroli or frankinsence essential oil (no more than one drop of essential oil to three teaspoons of base oils) is arguably the best treatment you can give to dry, ageing or devitalised skins. Olive oil is also a great anti-ageing treatment for these areas, and contains essential fatty acids and many other beneficial elements that more expensive oils such as apricot kernel, avocado or jojoba contain. Apply in the evening.

Knobbly body parts

It’s never too late to improve the appearance of less than smooth areas of the body. As we get older, areas such as tops of knees, inner thighs and arms, hips or tummy start to look bumpy or knobbly. This is not always linked to weight and is partly due to fatty deposits and toxins settling in those areas. The trick to preventing or minimising this ‘knobbly’ look is to regularly rev up the circulation under the skin. After all how do you think expensive body smoothing/firming/cellulite treatment courses work? They are effective not just because they incorporate clever electrical currents or wonder ingredients, but because they mainly rely on the fact that the blood and lymph circulation are vastly increased in these areas during treatment, carrying away toxins and waste and helping to increase the metabolism of the tissues, which speeds everything up and breaks down stubborn fat deposits. If you get into the habit of regularly increasing the circulation to these areas over months and years, you will be performing your own anti-ageing, smoothing, firming and even slimming effect. All you have to do is get a loofah, friction mitt or knobbly massage glove and use it with a gentle shower gel and scrub the skin over those areas, or, even better, the whole body in the shower. Do this at least two or three times a week. In the summer you may not want to use an overly ‘scratchy’ mitt to prevent over sensitising the skin, so use a blunter feeling plastic massage glove. Get into the habit of massaging these areas too while rubbing in your favourite lotion, oil or firming gel. Dry brushing the skin over these areas is also good.

Lose a few pounds without dieting

If you only want to lose those couple of pounds that somehow managed to go unnoticed under winter clothes but which now have nowhere to hide, it is easier than you think. Just cut things out here and there. Start the body scrubbing regime described above and simply cut out unnecessary junk such as chocolate bars, sweets, desserts etc. Stop eating meals just a tad before you are full and in this way your stomach will shrink. Cut your fat intake down for a couple of weeks. Butter, margarine, cream, any oils, cheese and all pre packed foods that contain oils and fats should be cut right down. If you drink alcohol, have one less than you normally have.
