What’s real about Sex and City?

THE VAST majority of American TV shows are written by men, including the ones with a woman as a protagonist. Rather like men designing clothes for women – they almost never really fit real female bodies.

Some TV shows with female protagonists appeal both to male and female audience and a perfect example is Sex and the City. It was created and written by women, and therefore supposedly provides a more realistic depiction of what it means nowadays for a woman to have a love life and a career.

But even this show falls into the grip of unrealistic glamour. The protagonists are always well dressed – often uncomfortably so – their hairdos are so ornate and sleek only a hair salon could have crafted them, likewise their make up. They drink so much alcohol that there is no way they could be as fit as they seem.

Well, let’s have a realisitc, feminine point of view on how these role-models are presented. To be so well dressed - with different clothes every day - requires an incredible amount of money, something that the female audience certainly can’t afford. True, those TV women are supposedly working all the time. But let’s do the maths and work out how much time they would actually spend working with the lifestyle they have.

For a hair salon to be able to handle someone who wants wavy, straight or curly hair (to women who don’t naturally have this kind of hair) it takes roughly between one and one and a half hours; a manicure takes another half hour. To put on such refined make up is yet another half hour. To have time to hang out with your friends and drink youself sensless, takes approximately two to three hours. At least another half an hour goes into dressing and undressing.

And we shouldn’t forget the shopping. The supermarkets can strangle your life, robbing you of forty-five minutes to a whole hour. Clothing and shoe shopping takes another half hour – and that’s if you have made up your mind in advance. Transportation in New York can take from thirty minutes to an hour. Then, they have to go to a gym to stay in shape, that’s at least one and a half hours. For the various bathroom rituals such as brushing teeth, removing make up, applying beauty creams and – oh, I almost forgot – taking a shower, being as obsessively clean as any American is – let’s add two hours to our count. I’ve left out sexual activity, whether occasional or frequent.

Every day the characters in Sex and the City have to spend at least seven and a half hours – to be conservative on time - to look as they do. Assuming they wake up at 7am – certainly suffering from a hangover considering how much they usually drink - and go to bed around midnight, their days have 17 hours of ‘wake’ time. If we subtract the beauty hours, and just some of those other activities listed above which they might not necessarily do every day, they still have nowhere near enough time to put in a full working day let alone make phone calls, call the plumber, or eat lunch and dinner.

The allure for the audience of this series resides precisely on this paradox. Women can dream of such a life and men enjoy seeing women in stiletto shoes running around a whole day. Aside from the clever script and very good performances, there is a hidden message in this TV show: television really is so much better than life.
