Doctors leaving government posts

EIGHT government doctors are preparing to leave Nicosia General Hospital to work in the private sector, according to media reports yesterday.

Health Minister Christos Patsalides was yesterday abroad and therefore unavailable for comment, as was PASYKI, the government doctors’ union.

Two different daily newspapers – Phileleftheros and Simerini – yesterday headlined the doctors’ plans to move, citing inside sources.

According to both reports, eight doctors of various specialisations are currently in talks with private clinics. And this is not just because of the financial issue, but also the dire conditions under which state doctors are currently working, the reports said.

The excessive workload, lack of vital materials, long waiting lists and serious shortcomings in the hospital’s departments are just a few of the problems doctors have to face.

This is not the first time public doctors have organised a mass walk-out. Makarios Hospital’s Child Cardiology Department had to close down when all three child cardiologists left for jobs in the private sector.
