The value of dinner diplomacy

Sir,

I couldn't agree more with Constantinos Lordos regarding the value of informal exchanges in bridging differences, allowing areas of agreement to surface and, who knows, leading perhaps to eventual rapprochement. I understood the dinner honouring Ferdi Sabit Soyer to have been in just that convivial spirit.

This is the Ferdi Soyer, the Turkish Cypriot prime minister – I'll spare him the "pseudo" – who is ready to begin restoration of the Apostolos Andreas monastery, one of Eastern Christendom's most venerable monuments. There he is walking along Ledra Street with DISY leader Nicos Anastassiades who comments, "we live under the same sky" – what more powerful metaphor of unity?

Tassos Papadopoulos' disparaging "dinner diplomacy" remark shows how much a prisoner of the past he remains. The Cyprus problem seems to be moving in promising new directions. Tassos is not. I was struck by remarks the other day by Mustafa Koc the legendary Turkish industrialist who took his government to task for mismanaging the country's priorities. Mr Lordos seems to be serving the same purpose in Cyprus.

Could it be that the ministry of foreign affairs in both countries is in the wrong hands?
