New laws to tackle hooliganism

PARLIAMENT has unanimously approved legislation which hopes to tackle football hooliganism and violence in sporting areas.

Among other things, the law provides for the installation of cameras in all first division stadiums and specified seating for fans so that the arenas do not become overcrowded.

Courts are also authorised to ban unruly fans from attending sporting events.

“The specific person will remain at the police station so they would not be able to go to the stadium and watch their team,” House Legal Affairs Committee chairman, Ionas Nicolaou told reporters.

Stewards will be employed during matches to keep an eye on supporters, while there will be tougher police checks on fans before they enter the stadium.

Other provisions make it a criminal offence to shout chants or project banners with political content, nationalistic insults or racism. National symbols such as the Greek flag will be allowed into stadiums only if they haven’t been altered in any way.

There would be a three-year grace period for all stadiums to meet the law’s provisions.

However, the committee had recommended that the capital’s GSP Stadium – home to Nicosia’s APOEL and Omonia – should start implementing the law with the start of the new football season.
