Perdikis calls for public vote on Lisbon Treaty

GREEN party deputy George Perdikis provoked general mayhem at Parliament on Thursday, when he announced his intentions to propose a public referendum for the Lisbon Treaty.

During a conference between the party leaders and representatives this week, Perdikis announced his plans to make the proposal at next Thursday’s Plenum meeting – the date set for discussing and voting for or against the Treaty’s ratification.

His plans were denounced by all other parties, including AKEL who recently announced they would vote against the Treaty.

AKEL parliamentary Spokesman Nicos Katsourides asked Perdikis to avoid submitting his proposal on the specific date so that it doesn’t overshadow discussions on the essence of the Treaty.

Despite receiving pressure from all sides – including House President Marios Garoyian, who pointed out that even by putting the question of a referendum forward would give the EU the impression that Cyprus was having second thoughts – Perdikis insisted on his position, saying it was a decision made by his party’s leadership.

This resulted in another meeting being scheduled for the afternoon, to which Attorney-general Petros Clerides was also invited.

Clerides was first given a list of questions over the possibility of carrying out a referendum and how it would be binding to the government.

During the afternoon meeting, the AG said that Parliament was legally allowed to request a referendum from the government. He also explained that in his opinion, the result of the referendum would be binding.

Perdikis was again asked to reconsider, as all European parliaments had a commitment to ratify the Treaty (except Ireland, which was bound by its constitution to carry out a referendum).

According to Politis newspaper, AKEL representatives also relayed President Demetris Christofias’ wish to avoid a referendum.

Perdikis yesterday informed the Cyprus Mail that his party would reach a final decision on the issue on Tuesday.
