Cyprus contributing to refugee camp reconstruction

CYPRUS is contributing €100,000 to the reconstruction of the Palestinian Nahr el Bared refugee camp in Lebanon.

Cornelius Corneliou, the Foreign Minister’s Office Director, announced the decision during the International Donors’ Conference in Vienna, held under the auspices of Austrian Foreign Minister Ursula Plasnik.

Speaking at the conference on behalf of Foreign Minister Marcos Kyprianou, Corneliou said Cyprus had included Lebanon in its Strategy for Development Co-operation.

“Between 2007-2011, and under the long-term commitment to support Lebanon, Cyprus will spend €1.1 million for reconstruction projects in Lebanon,” he said.

Corneliou also said that Cyprus was closely monitoring the developments in Lebanon, as the nearest EU member state and given the historical ties of friendship between the two states.

“Under the provisions of the Doha Agreement and with the election of President Suleiman, Lebanon is entering a new era of stability,” he said, expressing the hope this would contribute to the peace process in the Middle East.

The Nahr El Bared refugee camp is situated near the city of Tripoli in Lebanon. Nahr El Bared was completely destroyed during the Israeli onslaught on Lebanon in 2006.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), the Government of Lebanon and the World Bank, plan to rebuild a town for 27,000 people at an estimated cost of €182 million.

The project is expected to begin in 2009 and to be concluded in 2011.
