Greens seek to toughen smoking laws

THE GREEN Party yesterday submitted a bill aiming to ban smoking in all public places.

Existing laws, according to deputy George Perdikis, can be interpreted in various ways and it needs to be made clear that smoking in largely populated areas is dangerous to public health.

“The aim of the bill is to specify a correct interpretation of legislation regarding smoking bans in areas where there are many people, who become exposed to passive smoking,” Perdikis explained. These areas include nightclubs, restaurants, cafeterias, kiosks and bars.

“Despite the fact that 88 per cent of Cypriots agree with a complete smoking ban, smoking is still allowed in the vast majority of public areas,” he added.

“This proposal will end all misunderstandings and clarify that in areas where many people gather, there is no longer room for cigarette smoke, as is the case in almost all other European countries,” said Perdikis. “It has been proven that the coexistence of smokers and non-smokers – who are the majority – is problematic and seriously affects public health.”

To set the good example, when the smoking law was passed, deputies decided to ban smoking inside the Parliament building. However, as Perdikis pointed out, this never happened.

The proposal will be discussed in the coming weeks at the House Health Committee, while Perdikis said he hoped it would be approved by the Plenum in the next fortnight, before Parliament closes for the summer recess.
