SCORES of people went to the community market in Larnaca yesterday to try and obtain some get food as most of them have no means to withdraw money from the banks.

From 7am around 1,200 families, whether they were entitled to  food or not, received help from the Larnaca community market. Many companies and organisations contacted the city hall to donate food.

Larnaca Mayor Andreas Louroudjiadis said people should keep calm. “I want to assure the citizens of Larnaca that the municipality will stand by them. One person’s problem is everyone’s problem. Today, just like every week, the food that is given out is a dose of love and solidarity to our fellow citizens and we will continue to offer the necessary help they need,” Louroudjiadis said.

“Today the Larnaca community market does not separate those who are entitled to food from those who are not. Today we are giving food to anyone who asks for it. This is a very difficult time.  Solidarity is very important to us,” he added.

Father Constantine, the director of the soup kitchen of the Kition Bishopric said that “all parishes and churches have been offering help since the start of the economic crisis. Daily rations are given to around 200 people who don’t have enough to eat, at the cultural centre of Saint George Kontos Monestery.

“During the last few days more people have been coming to us for help. This has created problems as we only have enough space and machinery to accommodate 200 to 250 people a day,” he said.

“While the banks have been closed more people have been coming to the soup kitchens for help. We do what we can but our help is based on the offerings of others,” he added.

The volunteer association ‘Solidarity’ in Paphos said it was running out of food.

Paphos councillor George Sofokleous said: “The volunteers currently give out 200 servings for people in need every day. This amount is shrinking week by week. We used to give out 500 servings but yesterday we could only give out 200. The restaurants who prepare the food have already announced that they will only be able to offer food for another one or two weeks due to increasing costs.”
