CyBC salaries

Sir,

I nearly choked on my coffee when I read the article about pay in semi-government organisations (‘€63,992: the average salary at the CyBC’ – Cyprus Mail, June 17).

The fact of the matter is – mentioned only in passing in your article – that a large proportion of CyBC employees are “contributors” who have no job security, receive very little pay (you quote an average of €16,786 but most of the contributors I know get much less), no pension scheme or provident fund, and no sick leave allowance – if they have to take a day off sick, they don’t get paid!

I’m pretty sure an audit would almost certainly reveal that productivity in the salaried staff sector is almost nil while the contributors, who have not, as far as I know, received any increase in their remuneration for over ten years ‘produce’ most of the Corporation’s output. The salaried staff, of course, receive the annual CoLA increase, as well as all the other benefits, not to mention a fat pension (and a golden handshake) when they leave.
