Bid to avert municipalities strike

THE LABOUR Ministry is desperately trying to stop a 24-hour strike planned for tomorrow by workers of the eight Nicosia municipalities.

The 1,000 workers are demanding the same providence fund payments as other public sector workers.

Strovolos Mayor Savvas Iliofotou is the President of the negotiating team on behalf of the Municipalities of Greater Nicosia. He said that, “if the demands of the workers are met, this will be detrimental to the providence fund to the tune of millions, which will have to found from another source.”

He told the Mail that there is currently an agreed contribution in place whereby workers themselves contribute 6 per cent to the fund, while the municipality puts in 8.5 per cent.

“The workers are now demanding a guaranteed amount which they will receive when they retire.”

He added that the move to strike is “a worry, premature and not justified” as the municipalities should be given time to find a solution to the problem.

It is not thought that the workers’ demands will be met, during the current economic climate, with alternatives, such as outsourcing refuse collection being considered, which the municipalities believe would reduce costs.

Commenting, General-Secretary of the SEK trade union Nikos Tambas said: “Other than subsidies given out by the government, all other funds that municipalities contribute to come from the taxpayer.”

SEK has said that it is willing to discuss the privatisation of certain services, but claims that this will actually turn out to be more expensive.

A member of the Labour Ministry’s mediation team said that a meeting involving all relevant parties will be taking place this morning, “where we will try and find a solution.”
