Scottish football manager recuperating after surgery

THE MANAGER of a Scottish football team is recuperating in Paphos after a fall beside his villa swimming pool left him requiring surgery.

Neale Cooper, manager of second division Peterhead FC, is best known as a member of the Aberdeen side which won the 1983 European Cup Winners’ Cup.

The former midfielder had only enjoyed five days of his holiday when he slipped beside the pool in Coral Bay. Within 48 hours he began to suffer from serious back problems and received painkilling injections during a hospital visit last Sunday.

He was discharged but was unable to move the following day. An ambulance was called and scans at the hospital revealed the extent of his injury.

On Wednesday, surgeons spent two hours repairing damage which had left him unable to walk.

“The doctor who performed the operation said he had never seen damage like it,” Cooper told The Press and Journal. “He had to remove five pieces of a shattered disc which were lodged in the nerve channel and causing me so much pain.

“I have had injuries during my football career but have never experienced anything like this. It has been excruciating.”

The 44-year-old expressed his gratitude to doctors and staff for the treatment he has received and for the support shown from friends and family back in Scotland.

Cooper is due to lead Peterhead’s first pre-season training session on June 26, but the indications are that he may have to remain in Cyprus until next month.

“I had a fantastic first few days, doing plenty of walking and swimming in glorious weather, before the holiday was cut short.

“I came out on my own for a break ahead of pre-season training but it has turned into a nightmare. There’s little point in my family coming out because I’m bed-bound.”

The specialist has told him that he may be able to start walking again this weekend but has warned that he may not be passed fit to fly for another three weeks.

“My main priority is getting fit again and making sure I can get home. I’ve always been a quick healer and hopefully it will be the same this time.”
