Number of poor schoolchildren rises

THE number of disadvantaged pupils rose significantly as a result of the economic crisis, a teachers’ union said yesterday, urging the state to find ways to tackle the problem.

“We are now talking about a substantial number. We are no longer talking about the poor children of immigrants ... we are talking about children who come from Cypriot families where both parents are unemployed,” said Demetris Taliadoros, head the secondary school teachers union OELMEK.

Speaking after a meeting with House Education Committee chairman Nicos Tornaritis, Taliadoros said there has been a significant rise in the number of poor pupils, which the state had to tackle.

“We estimate that it must be around 10 per cent to 15 per cent of the pupil population of each school,” Taliadoros said.

He said it should not be viewed as an issue of charity and left to the parents associations and teacher unions to deal with.

“The state itself must find the mechanisms to support these children,” he said.

Tornaritis, a main opposition DISY MP, suggested that the education ministry was dragging its feet on the matter.

He said they had asked the minister to draw a comprehensive plan to tackle the problems faced by disadvantaged pupils during the economic crisis.

“It is sad, it is criminal, for a society that wants to call itself modern, to be unable to draft this plan within a reasonable time,” Tornaritis said.
