Cow farmers call for milk price hike

CATTLE farmers yesterday called for an increase in the price of milk, citing higher production costs and more expensive animal feed.

“The price should have gone up a month ago,” said Nicos Papakyriakou, manager of the Pancyprian Cattle Farmers’ Organisation (POA).

He was referring to a recent increase in the price of animal feed and increased production, believing that the extra cost should be transferred onto the price of milk.

Papakyriakou said the farmers have started to increase production to make up for the current shortage being experienced on the retail market, which was caused by an order to farmers to deliver 65 tonnes a day to the Pittas dairy.

This has left less milk to distribute to the rest of the market, and farmers said earlier this week, the problem could go on into October.

Papakyriakou said an increase in production has begun and will increase further by the end of September, which would help make up the shortfall. The reason production cannot increase further beforehand is because in general there is less milk available during the summer months as heat has huge adverse effects on a dairy cow’s metabolism by increasing her body maintenance requirements. Therefore as soon as the weather begins to cool down more milk can be produced.

Referring to the increase in price Papakyriakou said: “The increase has to happen…..how are we going to make money otherwise.” Papakyriakou was referring to that fact that the price of animal feed has risen recently.

Meanwhile chairman of the organisation Savvas Evangelou believes that something should be done about the Cyprus Grain Commission’s alleged cheating of producers. He also let loose a torrent of criticism at the Commission for the Protection of Competition (CPC) questioning why they had not done anything about the Grain Commission, calling the CPC “the gangrene of farmers.”
