Massive police operation in Larnaca

POLICE conducted a wide-scale operation starting on Friday and ending yesterday in Larnaca to combat gambling, noise pollution and copyright infringement.

According to police spokesman Andreas Angelides, during the early hours of yesterday police raided a premises that was set up as a casino. They arrested 16 people and charged them in writing in connection with gathering in order to gamble illegally. They were later released. Police seized from the premises 16 tables, four roulette machines, a large number of cards, $3,605 (€2,852), ?80 sterling (€99), 5,200 Israeli Shekel (€1,068), a cheque for €100 and €6,000 in cash. 

Angelides said they had been hidden in places within the walls, and were “evidence that supports the offence of gambling”.

A 68-year-old man was arrested during the raid in connection with copyright infringement after police found and seized 1,083 DVDS containing musicals and 319 DVDS of various movies, that appeared to be copies. They also seized a computer used for burning the DVDS. Police also discovered that the suspect had six fines amounting to €4,416 that he had not paid.

Investigations at two pubs revealed that they did not have the correct licence to be open and serve alcohol. The owner of the first pub was arrested as police discovered that he had not paid a number of fines amounting to €12,870. Police also confiscated 193 bottles of alcohol and four speakers. At the second pub, police seized 125 bottles of alcohol and 17 speakers. Again the owner did not have the correct licence to run the place.
