CyBC director general reappointed

THEMIS Themistocleous was yesterday reappointed as Director General of the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC), after the board of directors reviewed his 2002 application.

Themistocleous was stripped of his post on May 11, after the Supreme Court accepted an appeal by two former candidates for the position.

The court said it accepted the appeal – made by Michalis Stylianou and Marios Mavrikios - because the CyBC board of directors at the time failed to carry out a sufficient investigation into Themistocleous’ previous experience before appointing him. It said the board’s verbal assurance that Themistocleous had sufficient experience was not enough.

Last week, CyBC chairman Makis Symeou said all 10 candidates – including Themistocleous - who applied back in November 2002 would be reassessed by the board, which would then decide who would be appointed.

Symeou also admitted that as an error had taken place with Themistocleous’ appointment, whoever was appointed next would have to be appointed as of November 2002, meaning they would be paid the difference between their salary from that date and the salary they would have gotten had they been appointed director general – all at the expense of the Cypriot taxpayer.

The CyBC board will now inform the cabinet of its decision, which will officialise Themistocleous’ appointment.
