Barack Obama’s sensational achievement

THERE is an elderly black American generation still alive today who can remember the time when no one of their race could cast a vote in some parts of the United States. That generation will remember that their own grandparents were born as slaves. Today, they are witnessing the real prospect of America electing a black man as its president in five months’ time.

Almost 45 years after black civil rights leader Martin Luther King delivered his famous “I have a Dream” speech, the rise of Senator Barack Obama to the Democratic nomination is nothing short of sensational, all the more so in a system so dominated by political dynasties, insider politics, lobbies and big, big money.

Some commentators will claim the Democratic nomination was lost by Hillary Clinton. But for all her mistakes, that would be to detract from the achievement of the young senator from Illinois. It was Obama’s success that made Clinton look first vulnerable, then tetchy and stubborn. He was the one who inspired, who seemed inhabited by a sense of mission, youthful, confident and sure of his objectives (however vague), while by the end her feistiness and determination came across as an ill-tempered and arrogant sense of entitlement.

There is no doubt that Barack Obama will for the first time bring to the electoral process huge swathes of black voters until now disillusioned and disenfranchised from the political system. He will also attract the votes of many white Americans who want to prove that America is great enough to elect a black President.

But Obama is keenly aware that racial politics will never take him to the White House. Indeed perhaps his greatest achievement has been precisely to set himself above the racial fray, to campaign as a mainstream candidate, as a US Senator, whose vision and ability gave him as much right as any other American to challenge for the presidency. Testament to that is that John McCain, his 71-year-old white Republican rival, the son and grandson of highly decorated admirals, is the one who fancies his chances as the man of the people, while Barack Obama, born to a white woman from Kansas and a Kenyan philanderer, has been accused of elitism.

After eight catastrophic years under George W Bush, marked by war and now recession, Obama has been able to tap into deep thirst for change, a yearning not just for a swing in the political pendulum from Republican to Democrat, but for something more fundamental than that. His achievement so far is already great, a landmark for America. Can he build on that to take the country against a rival who – far from being the McSame his opponents mock – has managed to chart a course of change allied with reassuring continuity? Only the coming months will tell.
