Tassos: Moller comments misunderstood

PRESIDENT Tassos Papadopoulos said yesterday that comments by UNFICYP Chief of Mission Michael Moller that the Secretary-general would not be launching a new initiative on Cyprus had been misunderstood.

Moller said on Thursday the UN had no plans to launch a Cyprus initiative on its own, but would rather “support the efforts of both sides to restart talks”, if they were serious about it.
When asked to comment yesterday, Papadopoulos said Moller meant that the UN would launch an initiative once it saw that signs of good will existed.

“We will give these examples of good will from our side,” said Papadopoulos.

“We have already shown signs that we are ready for initiatives and I believe that we have even given concrete proposals that show we are ready for substantial negotiations on the basis of the July 8 agreement.”
Statements out of the UN in New York yesterday reiterated Moller’s comments that there would be no initiative, but rather support would be given for efforts that would originate from the two sides in Cyprus.
The Secretary-general's Spokeswoman Michelle Montas said: “Moller, said that, rather than launching a new initiative on its own, the UN will support good faith efforts on the part of both sides to restart talks and work for a solution”.

The UN’s growing impatience with the lack of movement on the Cyprus issue was evident in Moller’s speech.

Moller said the answer to whether good will existed to restart talks did not lie with the UN but with the Cypriots themselves. He also warned of last chances and a crucial year ahead with a window of opportunity that would not remain open forever. If talks failed this time, permanent partition would be a real possibility.

An organisation calling itself the Union of Dynamic Resistance yesterday dismissed the comment, saying windows of opportunity would always remain open for Cyprus. They called the comments threats and blackmail.
