Man charged with raping flatmate
A 35-YEAR-old Egyptian man permanently residing in Limassol was remanded in custody after being charged with raping a 29-year-old woman, with whom he shared a flat, police said yesterday.
“The woman reported that the 35-year-old entered her room through the balcony door and raped her, after beating her. Following a court order, the suspect was arrested and appeared before court on Tuesday, where a remand order was issued,” said Andreas Angelides, Senior Officer, Limassol Police.
The woman, who is also from Egypt, told police that the man had assaulted and raped her on two occasions, the first on May 19 and the second last Sunday. The first case had not been reported to police, but when it happened for a second time, the 29-year-old decided to press charges.
“The woman did not report the first rape at the time it happened because she said she was scared, but when it happened a second time, she decided to report it to police. On the first occasion she had talked to her sister about what happened,” Angelides said.
According to the 29-year-old’s report, her bedroom door was locked and for this reason the man entered through the balcony door which was shut, but not locked. The woman’s daughter was in a separate room in the house when the alleged rape took place. The 29-year-old is married, but due to illness her husband is kept for treatment at a private clinic in Limassol.
The 35-year-old suspect denies raping his flatmate and claims he only had sex with her once, with her consent. “The suspect said that on one occasion he had consensual sex with the 29-year-old, but did not have intercourse for a second time, as the woman claims,” Angelides said.
The woman went through a medical examination yesterday and police are expecting that the medical report will aid the investigation.
