Morning gunshots in Limassol residential area
RESIDENTS of Kapsalos residential area in Limassol awoke to the sound of gunshot yesterday morning.
At about 5.10am a man shot at the balcony of a flat owned by a 46-year-old woman, living with her 40-year-old partner. Police believe the 40-year-old man was the target, due to financial differences he had with a 26-year-old suspect, who is wanted by police.
According to police, the 40-year-old man had borrowed €10,250 from the 26-year-old suspect nine months ago, but had failed to return the money. Over the past few months, the man had been receiving threatening phone calls, urging him to return the money to the 26-year-old.
“In his statement, the 40-year-old said that about nine months ago he had borrowed £6,000 from a 26-year-old man from Nicosia, but could not return the money. About four months ago, he was threatened by an unknown person to return the money, but failed to do so,” said Andreas Angelides Senior Officer, Limassol Police.
The 40-year-old had reported one of these threatening phone calls to police. “On one occasion, about two months ago, the 40-year-old had reported to police that he was being threatened by an unknown person,” Angelides confirmed..
The night before the attack, at approximately 9.30pm, the 40-year-old received another threatening telephone call from an unknown person who told him that he would cause damage to his person and to his property.
During investigations at the scene, police determined the suspect used a shotgun and fired a single shot, hitting the balcony door outside one of the bedrooms. Damage was caused to the door, the value of which has not been estimated yet. The 40-year-old and his 46-year-old partner were not harmed, as they were inside sleeping when the shooting took place.
A warrant for the 26-year-old’s arrest has been issued. Police are searching for him but have not tracked him down yet. Investigations continue.
