Christofias aide tightlipped on what the president knew

HEAD OF the president’s diplomatic office Leonidas Pantelides told reporters yesterday he had “taken steps to promote the destruction of the dangerous cargo with the President of the Republic’s firm consent”.

He added that he had made no public statement so far because he had not wanted to influence the police investigation in any way.

Earlier in the day rumours surfaced that Pantelides had told the defence committee meeting that Christofias had been informed about everything. But yesterday afternoon the senior civil servant said he had said no such thing.

He said he had told the committee that the president had been informed about a change in Iran’s stance in September 2010 and about a subsequent meeting at the Defence Ministry regarding the destruction of the cargo “exactly because of the assessment at that time regarding potential dangers”.

He also said he was a civil servant, not partisan and that he did not identify with Christofias, nor did he protect him, or undermine him.

Pantelides refused to tell reporters whether or not Christofias had been informed regarding the danger of the cargo and said answering questions risked jeopardising the ongoing police investigation.

“I’m not here to answer your questions. I have answered the police, I have answered the committee, I will answer (Cabinet appointed investigator Polys) Mr Polyviou. I don’t think it is right,” he said.

Last week Pantelides reportedly told the committee he only told the president what he deemed necessary.

The House Defence Committee yesterday convened behind closed doors to discuss the July 11 explosion at the Evangelos Florakis naval base in Mari, Limassol which resulted in the death of 13 men, 61 injuries and the destruction of the island’s main power station, Vassilikos.

The seven hour meeting was attended by relatives of the victims of the blast as well as host of senior officials, officers and representatives of other bodies involved in the cargo’s management before the catastrophe.

Several dozen members of the public gathered outside parliament from early morning. Carrying slogans such as “the people have woken; now they will condemn them” and “lift immunity for justice”, the protestors greeted attendees of the meeting as they entered the building.
