Last farewell for twin victims

Poly Pantelides

SCORES of people yesterday gathered in Limassol to bid a final farewell to the twin 19-year-old brothers Miltos and Christos Christophorou, who were killed in Monday’s naval base explosion.

As the caskets with the sailors – draped in the flags of Cyprus and Greece – were carried inside the church, they were greeted with extended applause as some cried “heroes.”

Dozens of mourners wore blue and white – the navy’s colours -- at the family’s request.

Many hugged each other for comfort crying, others endured patiently in the scorching sun for hours and the heat made worse from a power cut caused by blown fuses.

Just as was the case at the eight funerals on Wednesday, mourners were filled with anger but the family of the victims actively discouraged people from using the funeral to criticise the government.

Hissing and booing echoed everywhere when Interior Minister Neoclis Sylikiotis placed a wreath on behalf of President Demetris Christofias, but the twins’ mother intervened and motioned to stop.

Earlier, people applauded the twins’ schoolmates when they said during their speech that “those irresponsible individuals who killed the brothers must pay.”

At some point during the service the elderly priest of the Ayia Triada church burst into a spontaneous wail:

“I didn’t expect that at this church, where you held the cherubim, your coffins would now be unexpectedly lay here so soon.”

“I’ve lost two angels,” the boys’ tearful grandmother Lella Xiourouta said during her speech.

She addressed her last farewell by way of a poem in the Cypriot dialect.

The poem called for the twins’ father to “stand tall” until he met his boys again to talk to no end.

The brothers were born on September 9, 1992 and joined the army a year ago serving the National Guard as sailors together.

They have a younger sister, 16.
