Stately rally zooms off

THE 20th International Historic Car Rally began in Nicosia yesterday with a record-breaking number of entries.

The three-day event, organised by the Cyprus Automobile Association and the Friends of Historic and Old Cars of Cyprus, is taking place under the auspices of the International Historic Vehicles Federation.

This year sees 99 cars taking part, with crews from Israel, Britain, Greece, Sweden, Lebanon, France and Cyprus.

They will cover a total distance of 474 kilometres in 12 special tests, divided over three legs, which, according to the organisers, “run through the most picturesque landscapes of the island”.

Yesterday, the vehicles covered 106 kilometres from Nicosia to Platres, with the second leg today covering 143 kilometres from Platres to Paphos.

The third and final leg tomorrow, which is also the longest, covers a distance of 225 kilometres from Paphos to Nicosia. The cars are expected to reach the capital at 5pm, with a prize ceremony taking place in the municipality gardens shortly afterwards.

Vehicles eligible to enter must not have been manufactured later than December 1983.

The oldest car taking part is a 1931 Ford Model A, driven by Christopher Koutsakos. The youngest car is a 1983 Mercedes 123.

The car will the smallest engine (567 cubic centimetres) is a 1958 Fiat Topolino. One of its previous owners was former Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

Also on show will be a 1937 Chevrolet Master Six, a 1964 MGB Roadster, a 1966 Ford Mustang, a 1977 Ferrari 308 GT4 and a 1978 Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith.

General-Secretary of Friends of Historic and Old Cars Petros Demetriades told the Mail that the public “will have a chance to see some very special and rare cars. After the end of the final stage, the cars will be parked at the D’Avila Moat where people are free to come and admire them.”
