High profile opening for Home for Cooperation

THE INAUGURATION of the intercommunal Home for Cooperation (H4C) took place in the buffer zone near the Ledra Palace in Nicosia yesterday with Greek and Turkish Cypriot representatives and leaders including Dervis Eroglu and President Demetris Christofias.

Despite the heavy presence of foreign ambassadors and United Nations officials it was a decisively Cypriot affair with Mediterranean timekeeping and a relaxed attitude towards the efforts of the UN security forces to keep cameramen, journalists and passers-by in designated areas.

At some point the UN gave up and let Cypriots be Cypriots as people moved around to take a look or speak to someone they spotted from a distance.

The first community leader to show up was Eroglu prompting jokes about how “Eroglu is one step ahead” but Christofias soon followed and a number of officials and ambassadors from the UN, Norway, Sweden, the USA among others settled down to listen to the speeches.

Christofias had the opportunity to crack a joke as he accidentally knocked over a microphone from a member of the Turkish Cypriot press.

“I hope I am not judged on this tomorrow,” he said.

On a more serious note, he talked of the need for rapprochement, “a necessary precondition for a solution [which] will safeguard its viability.”

“Confronting historical events and experiences no matter how painful is part of the healing process,” Eroglu said.

Appropriately, people later got a peek of the trilingual educational pack ‘A look at our past’ to be disseminated to schools and teachers in Cyprus, a result of the efforts of the bicommunal Association for Historical Dialogue and Research which is housed in H4C, an educational and research centre.

“Across the island we have witnessed increasing numbers of Cypriots take part in events and activities which encourage deeper personal bonds and greater understanding,” Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Cyprus Lisa Buttenheim said.

Major donors of the project are the European Economic Area and Norway Grants, Sweden, Switzerland, the Netherlands and a number of individuals, organisations and authorities, in Cyprus and abroad. The Home for Cooperation is also supported by the UN Development Program and the US Agency for International Development.
