Angry doctors deny kickbacks

GOVERNMENT Doctors’ Union PASYKI has angrily denied suggestions its members had abused their positions to take kickbacks, demanding that the government come clean on the accusations and threatening action if the issue was not resolved.

The union was responding to media reports quoting unnamed Health Ministry sources that doctors were accepting bribes such as free trips abroad to exotic destinations and expensive cars.

The vice-president of PASYKI, Petros Petrides, told the Cyprus Mail yesterday that the doctors “feel exposed and offended and our financial credibility is at risk due to these accusations”.

“They are stigmatising all the union with these accusations, if someone has been bribed they should conduct an investigation, find out who it is, take them to court and fire them.”

Petrides added, “If the Ministry has evidence that doctors accepted bribes or travelled abroad or bought expensive cars, exploiting their position, they should make them public. These anonymous informers should come out in public if they believe in what they are saying.

“I phoned the doctors one by one and they have all paid for their tickets with their credit cards and we can release the credit card bills to the public.”

Petrides said the union was even considering action: “We are considering taking measures, these will be discussed in the meeting of the PASYKI Union Board next week, we have not decided yet, but all board members will propose measures, and striking will probably be one of them.”

Petrides clarified that if indeed such charges turned out to be true, then PASYKI would stand beside the Health Ministry in eradicating the problem.
