TAKE SEVEN FACE WASHES

Looking for glowing spring skin? We've tested seven face washes to find out what will really shift that winter grime

Neutrogena Visibly Clear 2-in-1
I can’t get enough of this. It's superb! While I was meant to be testing all seven, this was the one I kept sneaking back to. Neutrogena have come up with a very clever idea: a 2-in-1 face wash. Not only can it be used as a daily wash, it's also a weekly mask – leave it on for 5 minutes and you deep cleanse and condition. The white cleanser smells like clay and really cleans deep down. This is the one I will buy and buy again; my skin is now completely spot free!

St Ives Radiance Cleanser Apricot Cream Wash
The St Ives Apricot Scrub is the best exfoliator I have ever tried – so much so that I ask my mother to bring it out from the UK each time she visits. And this facial wash was a toned down version of the scrub – it's not only a rich, creamy cleanser, it also lightly exfoliates and "fights blemishes". Containing more than 80 per cent naturally derived ingredients, this was specifically for oily skin (mine is dry) so I was very surprised to find it didn't dehydrate my face at all. The only negative is that it's easy to go through this rather quickly.

Nutralead Liquid Soap
I've got to say that this was absolutely divine as a face wash once I got over the initial aroma, which was slightly rural Suffolk. The packaging being entirely in Greek, I haven't much of an idea what's in this. The only English wording says: "Pomegranate and jasmine liquid soap for facial cleansing and toning". It did take me absolutely ages to get it open, but when I finally managed to use it, I was most impressed. It left me clean without any dryness and my skin smelled flowery – a vastly aromatic improvement. Not the cheapest, but a good organic buy.

L'Oreal Happyderm
Another product I couldn't understand, as someone has spent a great deal of time sticking Greek labeling over the printed German. Neither language being meine glossa, I had a look at the funky pictures on the back. Apparently you have to shake before use and then hold it upside down. So I lay down on the bathroom floor with a flannel and gave this a shot. The white foam felt like silk on my skin. And my face certainly looked and felt clean without being squeaky. I had a nice glow too, but that may just have been from the rush of blood when I stood up.
Price: €6.60

Mastic Spa Mastic and Myrtle Face Wash
Mastic is mainly used as a chewing gum, having a strong slightly smoky, resiny aroma. Luckily this face wash had a fresh, lemony scent to it. I noticed it also contains Chios Myrtle – which Google informed me is the name of a cruise liner. It took me a while to realise that the myrtle could, in fact, be from the island of Chios. When I'd finished this epiphany, I gave the product a shot. The yellow gel felt smooth going on, and left my dry skin squeaky clean – I needed a really good face cream afterwards. More for greasy skin than my dry complexion.

Body Shop Aloe Gentle Facial Wash
I've been into the Body Shop since I was first a student, saving all my allowance to buy the White Musk range. So I was looking forward to the new Aloe products. As always with Body Shop merchandise, this was "fragrance-free, colour-free, soap-free, preservative-free", and though I needed to use quite a lot of this foamy wash to feel clean, it left my skin smooth, silky and without any need for moisturiser – surprising in a product that is specifically for sensitive skin. And I'm sure I'm doing my bit for the environment as well…
Price: €11.96

L'Occitane Honey and Floral Cleansing Jelly
I took this one camping as it's a bit posh looking and I wanted to stand out from the hippy soap-on-a-rope crowd! The first thing I noticed was the Braille on the label, the second was how much it looked and smelled (not tasted) like pure honey. This wash markets itself as a "Floral Cleansing Jelly" for sensitive skin. It certainly made my skin soft, and cleaned without drying. Oh, and however you hold it, it won't leak - no matter how many times you leg it out of the communal bathroom with a cockroach in hot pursuit. A really divine experience. Wherever you use it.
