Officials fight for Paphos airport

Bejay Browne

PAPHOS officials joined forces yesterday to meet the Cyprus Airways board in Nicosia to try to persuade them to carry out Eurocypria flights using Paphos airport.

CY has taken over Eurocypria flights but has announced that the flights, which were originally to and from Paphos airport, would be rerouted to Larnaca.

The news was another blow to Paphos airport. Only weeks ago CY announced it would be axing Paphos flights to both Heathrow and Birmingham.

The mayors of the three other municipalities in the Paphos district, Angelos Odysseus, Neofitos Akourshiotis and Tassos Kousapos, accompanied Paphos Mayor Savvas Vergas to the meeting yesterday with CY. Paphos business officials and deputies also attended.

Deputy Fidias Sarikas said: “There is no reason for Paphos airport to be sidelined, as the excuse that it is an old facility no longer applies. In fact the new airport has the capacity to increase the number of flights for new destinations.”

Another deputy Costas Costandinou added: “Paphos must not back down over any of the issues of flights using Paphos airport with the board of directors of CY, especially at the moment when the economic crisis is at a peak.”

Paphos International airport currently accounts for only10 per cent of the tourist arrivals to Cyprus.

“It’s almost as if Cyprus Airways has got it in for Paphos. Why do they keep treating us this way? The public should be very angry. Paphos has a great new airport and it should be used. They (CY) stab us in the back again and again, but this time they have gone too far,” said one local official.

“We have to stand up for our rights. This is the state airline, not a private company and their behaviour is disgusting.”
