7 million passengers pass through Cyprus annually

Larnaca and Paphos airports handle on average 270,000 aircraft and more than 7 million passengers annually according to the communication and works ministry’s latest figures.

Communications and Works minister Erato Kozakou-Markoullis said today that ongoing infrastructure development since 1978 had restored air traffic to its pre 1974 level.

However, she lamented the ongoing closure of Nicosia International Airport since the 1974 Turkish invasion of the island.

In a speech to mark the opening of a search and rescue workshop this morning, Markoullis said the invasion was a severe setback to Cypriot aviation, destroying the Airport, Cyprus Airways aircraft and much of the Air Navigation Services infrastructure.

“Through hard work, however, new infrastructure was put into service and by 1978 air traffic was fully restored at its earlier level and has flourished ever since” she said.

Twenty four countries and ten organizations are participating in in the workshop, which is jointly organized by the Committee for the Investigation of Air Accidents and Incidents and the Group of Experts on accident investigation of the European Civil Aviation Conference.

The workshop will continue tomorrow in Limassol with the company’s vessel EDT ARES, which specializes in aircraft salvage after accidents at sea.

The participating countries are China, Singapore, Belgium, Denmark, France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Britain, Finland, Ireland, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Norway, Hungary, Estonia, Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco and Tunisia

Markouli described the seminar as ''very important'', adding that ''It is a specialized workshop of the European Aviation Safety Agency and the fact that is taking place in Cyprus with the participation of representatives from many countries has its own significance.”

She said ''The results of this workshop will be important for Cyprus too, due to the tragic experience we had with the Helios plane crash but also for the flight safety in the European and global area generally.''

In August 2005, an HELIOS aircraft, carrying 121 passengers and crew destined for Prague via Athens crashed on the mountain side of Grammatiko, north of the Greek capital, killing everybody on board.
