Chiropractor accused of paralysing man

Elias Hazou

THE family of a 70-year-old quadriplegic man, who died of heart failure on Sunday, have pressed charges against a chiropractor for a physiotherapy session gone horribly wrong.

The deceased, Apostolos Socratous, had spent his last days in agony, three months after a chiropractor - identified only as a Greek national -  is said to have fractured his spine during physiotherapy.

An autopsy conducted yesterday confirmed the elderly man had died from complications as a result of him being rendered paralysed immediately after the physiotherapy session.

State pathologist Eleni Antoniou, who carried out the autopsy, determined that the man’s spine had been broken as a result of “a traumatic event, that is, it is not a fracture that occurred naturally”.

“It was a fracture that happened as a result of a person trying to give him physiotherapy and doing whatever it is that he did to him,” Antoniou said.

The pathologist explained that the fractured spine led to the destruction of several nerves in Socratous’ body, which committed the man to bed and to breathing via a respirator. That, in turn, brought about “necrosis of the digestive system, a serious pulmonary oedema and other problems congruous with quadriplegia.”

The deceased had spinal problems since childhood. But as a result of his spine being fractured, he was rendered hemiplegic (paralysis of one side of the body) and, subsequently, completely paralysed.

Socratous had initially been treated at Limassol general hospital before being transferred to a private clinic.

In addition to the autopsy report, police have taken statements from the deceased’s family, and will forward the file to the Attorney-general, who will decide whether the case is prosecutable.
