Psychologists to go clubbing to warn on drugs

Author:
Patrick Dewhurst

THE YOUTH Board of Cyprus (ONEK) has announced a pilot scheme, called “Safer clubbing” to send psychologists into night clubs to educate the young about the dangers of drugs.

The one year scheme will be conducted in cooperation with the anti drugs council, and will see three psychologists touring the Nicosia club scene in September, where they will be on hand to answer questions about drug abuse, and raise awareness about facilities that are available to drug users.

The trio will also set up alcohol breath testing machines to help Nicosia’s young party animals learn their limits and assess whether it is safe for them to drive home.

ONEK announced the scheme at a press conference on Tuesday less than a month after the United Nations celebrated international day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking, and it is the latest anti drug abuse initiative to be undertaken by the ONK’s “multipurpose centre” in Nicosia.

The plan is just one of several schemes being undertaken by ONEK’s 30 strong team, who also announced the signing of contracts with Nicosia Municipality for the operation of youth hostel and information point, in the Chrysaliniotissa region of the old town.

ONEK was established in 1994 to help the Cypriot youth to live in a free, creative, socially fair country, where they should have “upgraded social involvement, through the possibility of participation in the decision-making processes in regards to issues of their concern.”

They organisation aims to achieve this through programmes and support services for young people, advising the state on youth issues, creative leisure activities and infrastructure projects.

The Health Ministry also marked the UN’s anti drug abuse day with a press conference. Health Minister Christos Patsalides said at the event that as one of the most devastating scourges of modern society, the drug trade requires a coordinated involvement of government departments, social agencies, voluntary and any active citizen.

He said that prevention of drug abuse also requires a collective effort by the state, family, army, media, professional services, and that the Ministry had adopted a new strategy for the treatment of drug addicts.

Patsalides congratulated the efforts of civil servants, the anti-drug Council and the Mental Health Services and concluded by saying that the new anti drug strategy,  aimed to tackle all areas of drug abuse, from prevention, treatment and rehabilitation, and had the structures in place to tackle dependency on a range of substances in Cyprus.
