Greek President: Key to a Cyprus settlement in Ankara

Greek President Karolos Papoulias has said that the key to a political settlement in Cyprus continues to rest with Ankara.

Cyprus House President Marios Karoyan, who met Papoulias here today, thanked the Greek President for the warm welcome and conveyed to him the regards, appreciation and love of Cyprus President Demetris Christofias.

Karoyan briefed Papoulias on the current phase of the Cyprus question, adding that “the President of the Republic of Cyprus has taken initiatives towards the right direction and this is recognised by the international community.”

“We certainly have faced the permanent Turkish intransigence and things have become more complicated due to the situation in Turkey,” he said, adding that “the international community has invested in this fresh effort these days towards a solution.”

Since his election to the presidency, in February this year, Christofias has made moves towards the resumption of negotiations, including an agreement in March with the Turkish Cypriot leader to set up working groups and technical committees to prepare the ground for substantive negotiations.

Karoyan stressed that President Christofias is trying with good will, good faith and political will to break the current deadlock, adding that “it takes two to tango and it seems that Mr. Christofias is dancing by himself for the moment.”

“But he is making a lot of effort. The international community recognises this work, his effort and his good faith and we hope that things will be lead to the right direction,” he added.

Karoyan said that so far the bicommunal teams of experts, comprising Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots which have been meeting for the past two weeks, have not yielded any results, noting also that there has been no change in Turkish policy.

He said that is why President Christofias had asked Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat to meet, in a bid to give an impetus to the process and find out where it is facing problems and the difficulties lie.

The House President said that there is not much room for optimism and wished for a change in Turkey’s intransigent stance to pave the way towards reunification of the island, which has been divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.

“The key to a Cyprus solution continues to be in Ankara,” Papoulias added.
