Saving grape varieties from extinction
The wines of Agricola Masi

Among wine enthusiasts everywhere the name Masi evokes fine Valpolicellas of every category, Soaves of distinct character and special blends no other winery can muster.

Agricola Masi has built a reputation for maintaining quality and saving indigenous grape varieties from extinction. The winery has saved at least one variety (Oseleta) from total extinction, which in itself is an honourable deed.

The history of the winery dates back to the 18th century following the Boscaini family’s acquisition of the Vaio dei Masi valley close to Verona. Since then the establishment evolved, gradually purchasing vineyards in the best location of Veneto. Masi also manages the historic Serego Alighieri family estate, descendants of the poet Dante. The estate was founded in 1353.

Today, Agricola Masi is managed by Dottore Sandro Boscaini and his daughter. The company specialises in premium wines using modern technology, but still following deeply rooted traditions if and when warranted. As an extensive tasting showed, Masi specialises in pleasant, well-balanced, terroir specific wines with long aftertaste that any connoisseur can discern immediately after taking a sip. Masi wines have cachet and possess refinement; they prompt one to take a second sip after the first. In short, Masi produces reliable quality.

The wines

2006 Masi Soave Classico “Levarie” abv 12%

From the Garganega and Trebbiano di Soave grapes, this wine has a clear straw yellow colour, mild, almost closed nose of pear, spice and herbal, green unripe component. Smooth as glass texture on the palate, the acidity is milder than expected but enough for matching with simple dishes. Limey citrus and mineral flavours dominate the finish, which is mellow and pleasing. Drink this by itself as an aperitif, with simple appetizers and with all kinds of mildly seasoned fish, vegetables and pasta. It is also a fine foil for spicy foods. €10.25

2006 Masi Passo Blanco, Argentina, abv 12.5%

A wine from Masi’s Argentinean venture in Tupungato Mendoza. This is a blend of Pinot Griggio and Torront?s. It has a highly perfumed bouquet of roses and orange blossom, with hints of grapefruit, peach and green apple on a rich and elegant, medium weight palate. Pair it with stronger flavoured fish such as tuna and shellfish, as well as white meats and grilled vegetables. €9.80

2005 Masi Bardolino Classico “Frescaripa” abv 12%

Bright red in colour, the intensity of the cherry, raspberry and strawberry aromas and flavours of this light wine is the result of the beneficial climate of Lake Garda. Masi makes this modern-styled wine from traditional Veronese grape varieties (Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara). Excellent with pasta dishes, it is also great with risotto, chicken or veal. €10.15

2006 Masi Valpolicella Classico “Bonacosta” abv 12%

Enjoyable, everyday Italian red, it has a bright ruby red colour with muted light blackberry and oak-like bouquet. On the palate this wine is round, quite juicy, has no hard edges and goes down real easy. It displays very tasty black cherry flavour; the finish is dry with hints of tannins. Pair it with lasagna, spaghetti with meatballs and even pizza. €10.15

2005 Serego Alighieri Possessioni Rosso abv 13%

Traditional Corvina grapes blend well with Sangiovese, which has always been cultivated on the estate. Brief ageing in cherry wood casks lends unique personality to the wine giving it a spicy, fruity body. Intense ruby red, its full and fruity bouquet offers perfumes of cherry, morels and plums with light hints of leather and vanilla. On the palate it is warm, smooth and full bodied yet well balanced by a fresh and persistent acidity. Cherry, vanilla and cocoa aromas still remain in the long finish. €11.85

2004 Masi “Campofiorin” Super Venetian, abv 13%

Deep ruby colour with a purple touch on the rim. The perfumes are very clean, with ripe fruit, raisins and spicy aromas, mainly cinnamon. On the palate the wine is round and offers complex aromas of ripe red fruits and berry fruit preserve. The good acidity and soft tannins give the wine its easy drinking style. €14.50
