Eight-day remand in shooting of Syrian man

A 51-YEAR-OLD Nicosia district village man was yesterday remanded for eight days in connection with the attempted murder of a Syrian man on Monday.

Two other men are in custody in connection with the same case.

The incident appears to centre round the Vietnamese housemaid of one of the suspects with whom the Syrian has allegedly claimed to be involved with. CID officers said the housemaid had yet to be located and it is thought that talking to her will shed much light on the investigation.

The incident occurred at 10pm in Paliometocho outside the Karapateas reception hall.

Nicosia CID officer Ioannis Azas told the court that the victim, 24-year-old Arar Zohair, went to the Karapatea restaurant where he bumped into three suspects who were standing outside. According to the investigation so far the first suspect, the 53-year-old employer of the Vietnamese woman, spotted Zohair and attacked him, throwing him to the ground and hitting him. Zohair told officers the 51-year-old suspect then proceeded to beat him with a stick. As the Syrian tried to flee the scene the third man, aged 34, also pounced on him. When the 24-year-old finally managed to get away the 34-year-old pulled a gun and fired one shot into the air and then fired at the Syrian, shooting him in the right calf.

“The Syrian dropped to the ground and started calling for help while the two suspects and the third individual ran off,” Azas said.

Sources close to the investigation said the incident appeared to have no reason behind it and resembled a momentary lapse of sanity.

“The 34-year-old might have wanted to scare him and instead shot him and actually hit him,” the source said.

The Syrian man’s condition is still serious although he has been able to give police a statement, the court heard. On Tuesday the court heard the 24-year-old condition’s was such that he had been unable to speak to officers.
