Paint your eggs red the green way

Patrick Dewhurst

THE WOMEN'S Ecological Movement (WEM) held its second annual eco-friendly egg painting event yesterday.

Representatives from the WEM, which is affiliated to the Green Party, set up a stall on Makarios Avenue yesterday, and invited children and parents to learn more about ecological egg painting.

Yianoula Markides, WEM Secretary General, said "We are promoting Easter egg painting with environmentally friendly, natural materials."

Markides demonstrated how to paint the eggs using a variety of everyday food products and materials, which are harmless to human health and the environment. These include Beetroot, tree roots, daisies, flour and spinach.

"We add dyes from plants and flowers to water, mix in a little vinegar and boil the egg for about half an hour, and the eggs change colour."

Their stall also displayed a number of eggs with vibrantly decorated floral patterns. "To make these, we take flowers, such as daisies, and press them against the egg. We put onion skins over the flower and then wrap netting around the egg to hold the flower in place."

The wrapped egg is then boiled in the dye to leave a pattern on the egg.

According to tradition, the dyed eggs are given to children on Sunday, and the first person to eat their egg is the one whose egg breaks first when bashed into another.

Founded in 2009 and with around 150 members, the WEM participates in various activities alongside the Green Party to promote environmental and women's issues in the Government controlled areas.
