Man held for admitting rape

A 25-YEAR-OLD man yesterday allegedly confessed to raping a woman after he broke into her home to rob her while she slept, police said.

The man, from Bulgaria, was arrested during the early hours yesterday in connection with a March 23 incident and was later remanded in eight-day custody. Police said the 25-year-old confessed to raping and robbing his 36-year-old victim under questioning.

The incident took place last Tuesday at around 2.40am. The victim told police she had been asleep in her bedroom when a stranger broke into her home, beat her and raped and then proceeded to steal several items of jewellery and money of unknown value. CID chief Thomas Efthymiou told the court the man had been tracked down after he was identified using a sketch prepared by the woman’s description of her attacker.

Efthymiou said: “When you know what you leave behind you, you confess easily and what he left behind was DNA.”

Commenting on the incident a police spokesman said the incident was a “rare” one and that random rapes did not happen often in Cyprus.

“This was a break-in and then he raped her. This is rare. Normally thieves just break-in, steal and leave,” he said.

“Even walking in the road is not [dangerous]. If you look at the incidence rate over a period of time you’ll see we don’t have a lot of random rapes. It’s not something that happens often and there is no reason for concern or to put out the message ‘oh we need to be careful’. There is no reason to alarm people.”

Despite the officer’s assurances, this did little to appease local women.

Elia Mitas, 33, was horrified when she heard.

“What here? You’re joking. Oh my God,” she said.

Asked whether something like that made her scared, she said: “Yeah are you kidding me. Wouldn’t it scare you? Being raped while you sleep. And in Cyprus.”

The 33-year-old, who has lived abroad for the past four years, said she couldn’t believe things like that happened in her home country.

“I’ve heard so many people spending a lot of money on locks or who have had their locks recently changed. Crime has gone up. It’s incredible. Do you remember when you were young? I remember sleeping with the doors unlocked and once accidentally slept with it open. You didn’t feel any fear. Now you would never do something like that,” she said.

This is not the first time this year women have heard about random rapes in Cyprus. In January this year a 28-year-old man was jailed for eight years after he was found guilty of raping a 50-year-old woman while she slept in her bed in 2008.

And in February this year two men were arrested on suspicion of raping two women after offering them a lift from Limassol to Nicosia.
